Bad news guys. Maybelline tests on animals and therefore is not a cruelty free or vegan company.
Unfortunately they sell their products in China, where animal testing is mandatory for foreign cosmetics and in addition to this their parent company is L’Oreal, who we are well aware of having a terrible ethical stance with no plans to improve this in future.
As stated on the Maybelline website, they fall under the same banner as L’Oreal’s animal testing policy.
In their FAQs it states: ‘L’Oréal no longer tests any of its products or any of its ingredients on animals, anywhere in the world nor does L’Oréal delegate this task to others. An exception could only be made if regulatory authorities demanded it for safety or regulatory purposes.’
This is a really misleading and incredibly frustrating that L’Oreal openly deceives its customers with lies of this nature. L’Oreal have confirmed they test on animals where required by law, and as their products are distributed throughout mainland China, where it is required by law, they DO test on animals. Cut the crap L’Oreal.
They also confirm they may test on animals when new ingredients are used in certain circumstances; if a company ‘only tests on animals when required by law’, it is not a cruelty-free company! Animal testing is animal testing.
PETA have Maybelline listed as a company to avoid:
