How to make an Acai Bowl

Acai bowls are all the rage it seems at the moment. If you search the hashtag #acaibowl on IG you can feast your eyes of some of the most pinterest worthy food you will have seen. And I am fully behind this movement. I think acai bowls are here to stay and I couldn’t be happier about it.

So what actually is acai and how the hell do you pronounce it?

Firstly, ACAI: (Ah – sigh – ee).

Acai is a berry that is mostly grown in South America and is considered a superfood for its mineral rich properties, and it’s levels of anthocyanins and flavonoids. It is thought to be very high in antioxidants, even more so than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry or blueberry!

You can buy these berries frozen (you’re unlikely to find them fresh in the UK), and you can also buy acai powder, which can be used in smoothies, juices and nice cream (banana ice-cream!).

I tend to use the powder as it takes up less space than a bag in my freezer, and you tend to get in more antioxidants as it’s in powder form so you naturally consume more. I also find with the powder you can add it to different flavour combinations. It’s a berry flavour and goes really well with banana, berries and even cacao.

So to make an acai bowl I usually blend the following:

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • Small handful of raspberries
  • 1 teaspoon of acai powder
  • Soya milk (depending on how thick/runny you want the bowl)
  • Hemp seeds (great source of protein!)
  • 1 tsp Maca Powder
  • Sprinkle of vanilla powder

I then transfer it to my preferred bowl and top it with all sorts of toppings! For this one I used passion fruit, quinoa porridge flakes, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, banana, cacao nibs and raisins. It was delicious!!

To get a vibrant purple colour you’ll want to use red/pink colours fruits such as berries and plums and neutral coloured fruits like banana, apple, avocado etc. Avoid dark greens as this will make the bowl a darker brown colour and you’ll lose the purple – obviously if you don’t care about the colour, go crazy with your blends!

I find this such a delicious way to pack in my fruit throughout the day – it’s so pretty it’s like eating dessert that is 100% good for you! If you add cacao powder to your blend it will taste like a bowl of chocolate ice cream too.

Why not give it a go and see what you think? Let me know how you get on!
